Lesson 1: Defining Moments

Did you ever wish you could treat your life like text in a Word document? You simply highlight the moment and press the delete key. Poof! Gone—removed from your life forever. If it were only that simple, right? God disagrees with this concept because He chose you and me to experience the tragedy or the hardship or walk through the difficult situations in life for a reason. That is how He molds us into the people we are today.

There are also times in our lives when we think, “Wow God is so good to me. I didn’t deserve His blessing today.” I love those unexpected moments, both good and bad, which define us and help us grow in our relationship with Christ.

Often, we need to look at our past, to see into our future. Every moment from the past has brought you to where you are today. It doesn’t matter if the bad defining moments outweigh the good ones in your life. You are here at this current moment in time for a reason.

Queen Esther is the perfect example of someone who suddenly found herself in the midst of a difficult defining moment. Mordecai requested that she appear before King Xerxes to save the lives of the Jewish people. If Esther requested to see the king when he had not called for her, it put her in a life-threatening position. So, Esther had a challenging decision to make, risk her own life, or risk the lives of the Jewish people. Not exactly the situation any of us would want to be in, but I love Mordecai’s response to her.

Read Esther 4:13-14

After much prayer and preparation, Queen Esther appeared before King Xerxes, and the Jewish people were saved. How was she able to stand strong and confident in this situation? She understood that God would be with her when she approached King Xerxes. Plus, she knew that God loved her and was crazy about her.

Read Isaiah 62:4

In this passage of scripture, Isaiah is praying for the people of Jerusalem. Esther also knew these words to be true and understood God had chosen her for a great assignment. These words are also a message to us today. A message of God’s unending love for His people.

Regardless of your past or your current situation, “The Lord delights in you.” (Isaiah 62:4). God is absolutely crazy about you. He loves your smile, your abilities, your idiosyncrasies, and even your flaws, because when you wrap them all together—they make you. Wonderfully, uniquely made you. The person He created to accomplish great missions here on earth.

Read Matthew 10:30-31

Read Psalm 56:8

God knows every hair on your head. He catches every one of your tears! How do these verses change your vision of God’s passion for you?

His love is so deep that all of your bad defining moments will one day be used for good. He has a great plan for your life, and that includes each experience you have had and will have, whether good or bad. Remember, no one else on this earth is exactly like you, and no one else on this earth is here to do what God created you to do.

When you reflect on the bad moments in your life, do you understand why God allowed you to go through these experiences?

Some say that bad defining moments should be swept away, hidden, and never be talked about again. But God will change those bad moments in your life into good one day. If you disagree, please don’t toss this study aside. Hang in there with me and you will understand where I’m coming from. I promise.

Do you agree or disagree that there are no bad defining moments in your life? Why?

Read John 8:1-11

The adulterous woman felt like an unworthy outcast. The Bible doesn’t tell us of her sorted past, but there were most likely moments in her life which caused her to become a promiscuous woman. This particular time, she didn’t hide her act of adultery in the dark of the night. She was caught and dragged out into the street in the middle of the day.

Many of us can relate to this woman. We have experienced the shame and humiliation she felt that day. Our sins may not be on public display, but they are very real within our own hearts, where we often hide our deepest pain.

Recall a bad defining moment in your life and how you felt about the situation. (You may or may not want to share this information in a group setting. That is okay, but please focus on the moment and see how God might transform it into good.)

Read Romans 3:21-24

How does this passage of scripture help you understand that God can turn the bad defining moments into good in your life?

As humans we categorize our sins, because of the consequences we face. In God’s eyes, sin is sin. The good news is that God’s grace is available for everyone, regardless of sin. He doesn’t pick and choose who to forgive or what to forgive. He forgives ALL confessed sins. So, this horrible defining moment in your life is no greater sin than the sin of forgetting to pray or the sin of overindulgence.

Reflecting on the bad defining moment in your life which you looked at earlier, how can you apply this scripture and understand how and why God will one day turn that moment into good?

Before you answer, you may want to reread Romans 3:23-24.

Yes, the woman caught in adultery had a horrible defining moment in her life that she would rather forget. Being caught and dragged into the street is not a moment to remember with pride and joy. However, this horrible moment will ultimately lead her to the hand of grace. As we continue with this study, we will look more into grace, because grace is the heart of God. But first, we need to understand her shame and humiliation in the next lesson.

Your Challenge

As I stated earlier, there are both good and bad defining moments in your life. Focus on both before the next lesson. What defining moments, both good and bad, in your life have shaped you into the person you are today? Because “Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14).

Lesson 1: A Wealthy Woman

I often wonder what it would be like to speak directly with some of the great saints of the Bible. I want to ask Peter how it felt to walk on water. For Paul I wonder, what was the thorn in his flesh? Was it a physical ailment, mental struggle, or a spiritual battle? But of all the New Testament servants of Christ, Mary Magdalene is one who seems the most mysterious to me.

Not mysterious as in secretive. Mysterious because I want to know—where did she find the strength to do all she accomplished for Jesus? We are first introduced to Mary in the Luke 8.

Read Luke 8:1-3

We have no other background about Mary Magdalene, except that Jesus performed a great miracle in her life. What else is there to say? Christ dramatically changed her life when He cast the demons from her. Once Mary discovered her Savior, she was totally committed to Him with a servant’s heart. She became one of Jesus’ followers and part of His road crew, so to speak. She worked behind the scenes and provided financial support for His ministry. Gratitude obviously flowed from her soul as she expressed her love for Jesus.

The scriptures say the ladies who traveled with Jesus and his disciples helped support them financially. This indicates Mary was from a wealthy family. She was so in love with Jesus, that she gave to Christ’s ministry without question.

Which do you feel is more important and why?

Your financial support to God’s church, missions, and ministry—or your compassion, love and concern for others?

Read Matthew 23:23-24

In this passage of scripture, Jesus states that tithing is important, but He puts a greater emphasis on how the Pharisees treated others. Jesus points his finger at their hypocrisy. Jesus is also speaking to us in this scripture. We cannot give financially and neglect doing God’s work. Caring for others within the congregation, the community, and the world is what we are commissioned to do.

There are times in our lives when both tithing and compassion can be difficult for Christians. You may be financially strapped and wish you could support the ministry of the church more. Sometimes your mental state is overloaded due to the stress of life. Many also suffer from Christian burnout due to over commitment.

In those seasons of life when you feel you have nothing left to give, how do you recover? (Examples: Pray, a hobby, rest, focus on nature, you fill in the blank.)

Read Psalm 46:10

How does God tell you to recover?

Read Matthew 11:28-30

Where should you find the strength to serve again?

When you are in a season of financial difficulties, you often feel guilty because you are not able to support the church and missions as your heart desires.

Read Luke 21:1-4

What does this scripture tell you about tithing?

God calls you to tithe, but only if your tithe is with a gracious heart. It isn’t about your financial status or your ability to give large amounts of money. When it comes to serving Christ, and that includes tithing, everything you do is about the heart. There is a huge difference between giving financially and giving financially out of love. Financial giving and serving others—are both about the heart.

Yes, Mary Magdalene, was a wealthy woman, but she also possessed a servant’s heart. In the next lesson, we will dig deeper into Mary Magdalene’s servant heart and begin to understand exactly how she was able to serve others endlessly.

Your Challenge

When you tithe, what is the condition of your heart? Spend time in prayer and ask the Lord to reveal the condition of your heart when you give—financially, emotionally, and physically to God’s ministry

Introduction

The straw baling season was over on the Rodman farm, and we were ready for some relaxation. We had planned on a mini vacation, but I had concerns about a sore on Jim’s leg. He reassured me that he was taking antibiotics and so we headed south for some much-needed R&R.

Our vacation was a combination of business and pleasure. We drove south to Florida to look at a home we rented for a couple of months this winter. Pictures can be so deceiving, but we found the outside to be well taken care of. I had the opportunity to meet the owner in person and she was a wonderful lady. I look forward to getting to know her better this winter.

Part two was to stop at a friend’s farm in Mississippi. Farming practices and crops are different across the country based on soil and weather. Jim was excited to learn more about this area and cotton production which we do not grow in the north. We enjoyed our stop, and it was a beautiful peaceful drive.

Part three of our journey was for me. I have worked on Zoom with my publisher, Diane, for several years, but we had never met in person. We were going to visit her and Rich in Texas and I was beyond excited. You could say I was ecstatic about the opportunity to meet her personally.

This is where our journey took a sideways turn and we were abruptly derailed from parts four and five of our vacation. God in His wisdom brought us into a season of blessings, which is beyond our comprehension.

As people, we focus on our work, and our busy lives making it easy to lose sight of the blessings which surround us each day. We can either slow our lives and focus on God, or He will do it for us!

In Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the crowd was focused on Him. All of the coats and palms were spread on the ground before Him in reverence. Our Savior was the center of attention as crowds praised Him saying, “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Mark 11:9).

And so I give all praise and glory to my Lord and Savior for the blessings we received during our BIG Texas Journey. A journey like no other. It was scary at times, yet there was a peace that cannot be explained, except by the hand of God. Many of His saints and angels blessed our lives in ways we will never be able to repay.

One may ask, how can you have blessings in the midst of adversity? John Maxwell says it best...The blessed life is blessed because Jesus is in it.

<align-center>
Lesson 1

Recipe for a Happy Life
</align-center>
It is the little things in life that make a huge difference in our hearts. A hug from a child, a spouse, or a friend. Settling in with a good book in the morning sunshine. A few quiet moments with God in the middle of the day. Sometimes it is showering your friends with an unexpected homemade treat.

When life gets super busy, we often miss the moments of splendor, which seem insignificant in the day-to-day struggles. We forget to look at the flowers in bloom, or to take an evening walk. On the rainy days we sulk, instead of anticipating the rainbow which is about to emerge when the sunshine returns.

Our lives can be in turmoil, or even under construction as God pulls at our heart strings to make a change, to see Him more, or to be with Him more. In those moments, look for the small blessings which surround you!

Listen to the birds in the morning sun. Read a good book. Journal your thoughts. Thank God for the blessings in your life, which you have not previously acknowledged. Most importantly, watch for the rainbow following the storm, because it is a symbol that God will always keep His promises.

Your rainbow may not be a physical rainbow in the sky, but a moment in time which makes you smile. All too often we miss these golden opportunities in life. These are the moments which lift our spirits and make life beautiful.

If you are surrounded by troubles, or having a humdrum day, search for God, and bask in His presence. It doesn’t have to be an earth-shattering moment to acknowledge His existence. He is everywhere, all the time, simply waiting for you to say hello.[1]
<align-center>
Seek God
</align-center>
We all struggle from time to time with being distant from God. You can continue to walk alone, feeling abandoned, or you can begin to search for His presence once again. Are you thirsty for God?
<align-center>O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you.
My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you
in this parched and weary land where there is no water.
Psalm 63:1 </align-center>
On your darkest days and longest nights, praise God and you will find Him. When you reach out to God, He is there. When you sing praises with your lips, He hears you. When you feel as if you cannot go on, He feels your pain and sorrow. When you need strength, He will hold you.
<align-center>You satisfy me more than the richest feast.
I will praise you with songs of joy.
I cling to you;
your strong right hand
holds me securely.
Psalm 63:5, 8</align-center>
Read Psalm 63:1-8 and record the many ways you can search for God, praise God, and how He finds you in the rubble of your life.

[1] Excerpt adapted from Bloom in God’s Promises by Mary Rodman

Blog post.

Isn't it supposed to be "April showers bring May flowers" not "May showers bring June flowers?" Once again, the rains have come to central Ohio in mid-May. It seems like our months are turned around this spring. May has been cooler and rainier than normal, with sunny days few and far between. It has become difficult for Ohio farmers to get their crops planted, our son included. We also feel blessed because we know farmers north of us who have not been able to plant any fields, and we have all of our corn in the ground. But as always, the farmers will forge ahead making the best decisions they can, with the weather God gives them.

Our months may be turned around this year, but occasionally our lives feel like they have been turned upside down and inside out. This past week, I heard many stories of unexpected deaths on the news and in the community. They ranged from accidents to illnesses which progressed quickly. But death isn't the only discouragement that makes us feel as if we are standing in the rain with no umbrella, and no end to the storm in sight.

God often allows us to walk through difficult seasons, to strengthen us and to draw us closer to Him. So what has you questioning God's sovereignty today? Are you struggling with a recent diagnosis? A wayward child, or a child graduating with an uncertain future. Mental illness, or drug addiction in the family. The list could go on and on.

We all face days when we ask God—why. It is your attitude in those situations that is the difference between facing the storm alone, or moving forward one step at a time until the sun once again shines. In times of doubt we can question God and turn away from Him, but that gives us no shelter. A better approach is to hit our knees in prayer, and dig into the scriptures for nuggets of truth to hold onto. Verses like...
<align-center>"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding." Proverbs 3:5

"When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation." Proverbs 10:25</align-center>
And one of my favorites, probably because I am a farm girl...
<align-center>Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines;
even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren;
even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!
Habakkuk 3:17-18</align-center>
Tragedy may surround you. Your finances may be a mess, or family issues may have you in turmoil. You may be suffering a great loss, or fearing an empty nest. But the scriptures tell you to be joyful! Joyful in times like these? Yes! Because God is guiding your steps. Allow His presence to fill the void in your life, and turn your rainy days into sunshine. Trust him with all your heart and allow Him to be your lasting foundation. No matter how troubled your heart is today, rejoice in the Lord. Why?—because He has you during the May showers and the June flowers are coming soon!
<align-center> "This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:14</align-center>

Blog post.

We were having breakfast in a small diner this week when an older gentleman walked in, and his son said, “Have a seat here Dad.” I was intrigued by their relationship and found myself looking in their direction occasionally. They were far enough away that I couldn’t hear conversations, but close enough to see facial expressions.

Trying not to act like a stalker gawking at them, I continued to glance their direction occasionally. It was obvious that the father was excited to have breakfast with his son. As the younger man talked, his father’s face lit up with excitement. He smiled from ear to ear as his son looked him in the eye and shared.

At first I wondered, what makes his father so proud of him, but soon realized that his father was simply excited to spend time with his son. Maybe this was a weekly event in their lives, or maybe his son lived far away and was visiting. I will never know their situation, but it really doesn’t matter. They gave me an unforgettable picture of an amazing father-son relationship.

Our Heavenly Father desires the same closeness with us, His children. It doesn’t matter whether we haven’t prayed in a while, or if we spent hours in prayer with Him yesterday. He is always anxious to hear from us.

God smiles when we tell Him our plans for the future. But when we calm our spirits and listen, He reminds us that His Word says. “For I know the plans I have for you, They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11 Emphasis added). I’m sure He smiles even more as we redirect our paths toward His will.

Even in our heartache, I believe God smiles. Why? “The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles.” (Psalm 34:17). Even when your heart and soul are in great agony, Abba Father is elated to hear from you. He feels your pain, but at the same time, He loves you and is happy that you are pouring your heart out to Him.

On the night Jesus was arrested prior to His crucifixion, He spent time with His Father. He could have called angels to rescue Him, but being rescued wasn’t the plan. Knowing the agony He was about to face, He cried out...“Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” (Mark 14:36).

During Jesus’ final hours on this earth, knowing that His life was about to end, He sought comfort and guidance from Abba Father. What an example of taking everything to our Father in prayer! There is no crisis, disaster, worry, or pain, that even comes close to the suffering Jesus experienced on the cross.

God is longing to hear from you, so as you celebrate Easter, please spend time in prayer with Abba Father. You can tell Him your plans, or you can pour your heartache out to Him. Just remember to thank Him for sacrificing His son, Jesus, so that all who believe may have eternal life.

Happy Easter!

<align-center>Goodness is something so simple; always to live for others, never to seek one’s own advantage. ~Dag Hammarskjöld

</align-center>
I have always thought my neighbor is an amazing young Christian woman. I have heard bits and pieces of her story, from having a child out of wedlock, to a family of four with a happy ending, or should I say beginning, when her husband adopted her oldest child. The entire family is an example of goodness, but the story she shared of her wedding day, solidified how I feel about her even more.

Hanging on our wall is a picture Jim gave me for Christmas. It says Jim & Mary and our wedding date. Behind those words are the lyrics to our song, “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now.” (And yes, I cried when I opened it.)

Our neighbor was here and asked about the picture. When I explained that it was our song, she shared about her own wedding. Leading up to their big day, she asked numerous family members and friends, “What is your special song?” She made them believe she was searching for just the right song, when she was really gathering information.

Her gift to her loved ones was revealed on the day of their wedding. Slowly throughout the reception, all the songs she had collected were played. It brought her great joy to look at couples and smile when their love song was played. You hear so many bridezilla stories, and this was quite the opposite. It was an act of goodness, sharing her own special day in such a selfless manner. She wanted everyone to feel the love she was experiencing!

God blesses us with our own love songs. His words of love are written throughout the scriptures. Words of love can be found in verses like, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16 NKJV). God loves you so much, that He sacrificed His son to cover your sins. All He asks is that you believe.

In return, God wants you to love Him back. “As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.” (Psalms 42:1 NKJV). God wants you to love Him so much that you long for Him. He wants to sing you love songs every day.

Is there a favorite verse or two that draw you close to the Lord? In order for you to continually sow seeds of goodness, you need to have a loving relationship with your Heavenly Father. My friend, He called you out of the darkness so you may show others acts of goodness. May you always walk so closely with Him that you feel His nudging to be a beacon of goodness in the darkness of this world.
<align-center>...You are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Peter 2:9).</align-center>

Enjoy this guest blog post from Erin E. McEndree. Even if you are not in the adoption arena, there is great wisdom in her words. I met Erin many years ago through a writer's group. Her calming spirit always makes one feel welcome and loved.

Erin's book is available on my website as well at https://maryrodman.com/updates. I will pass on the information to Erin and she will send you a signed copy.

Hi! I am Erin. I like to say I was my mom and dad’s little girl before I was born.

My birth mother got pregnant, and my birth father broke it off and did not take responsibility. My birth mother’s parents took her to a maternity home for three months until I was born. It was not her choice. She prayed for a Christian couple to raise me surrounded by the love of the Lord. She did not get to hold me or see me. The nurse told her I was a girl and that I had all 10 fingers and all 10 toes, which translated to, “You had a healthy baby.” Her dad came to pick her up, and I was never spoken of again. But that didn’t mean she didn’t think of me all the time.

My mom could not have children. She and my dad tried many different methods without success. There were tests and shots and temperature readings. Every month was a letdown without success. They adopted my brother three years before me.

My parents raised us surrounded by the love of the Lord. We always knew we were adopted because Mom read us books about being adopted. Being adopted was just a fact about my life. Mom and Dad equated being adopted to how God also adopts His children. I grew up reading and believing the passages about being chosen, adopted into the family, having the same rights as biological children, and as my great-grandfather said, “It ain’t no different. You love them kids as your own!”

I was content with my loving family. I never had a deep need to search for my biological family. I knew whose I was, God’s child, and that led me to be secure in who I was regardless of my beginning. There are so many biblical truths that were our lifestyle that helped me sidestep trauma or depression or anxiety or feeling rejected that can accompany adoption.

I always said, “If God wants me to know my birth mother, He will work it out behind the scenes and let me know.” Well, He did give her to me.

At 36, out of the blue, I came across an adoption connect website that helped adoptees and birth mothers find their biological parents or children. So, kind of for fun, I put my info on the board to see if a Search Angel could find anything. Well, within two hours I had our birth certificate number, her dad’s obituary listing all the relatives’ names, and her Facebook photo. God just gave her to me.

I was also sharing this with my parents. I didn’t keep any secrets. They didn’t keep secrets from me, and I was their child they raised with the same beliefs. My husband found her phone number in the phone book on the computer. But I didn’t use it right away because I was struggling with whether or not I was going to open a huge can of worms for her, cause her grief and pain, or destroy her relationships, especially if her family did not know about me. I was content and secure with my life. I didn’t need to know her to feel complete.

At the same time, I would go to a coffee shop and write. I’m a writer. One day I was talking to the owner, who made a great latte, by the way. She asked me if my last name was Williamson. I immediately got all teary-eyed and emotional, and she came to give me a hug and asked me what she had said. Williamson was the last name of my birth mother, whom I had not called. She said she had no idea why she said that name.

I told her God had just used her to let me know, “I, God, have given her to you. Call her.”

That night, December 14th, 2009, I called. Her husband answered the phone. I was mortified, hoping I had not just destroyed her life and brought up her past that she never wanted. I told her my name, that my hair was red like hers, my birthday, and that I would love to talk to her, but I wanted to know what she wanted to do. Then I paused. She paused. Then she said, “Can I put you on hold?”

Later, she told me she looked at her husband and asked, “This is my baby. Can I talk to her?” We just had our 16-year anniversary of that call.

She was also a Christian. We put the characteristics of Galatians 5:22–23, the Fruit of the Spirit, into practice straight away. It was already our lifestyle, and we practiced love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We always think of one another when we talk, my mom included, being careful not to dredge up the past. There is nothing back there we need. We started from December 14 and went forward.

We shared recipes, fun family photos, traditions, and became good friends. My mom was a little more cautious. She needed proof that my birth mother was not going to hurt me, was not trying to replace her, and didn’t want anything from me. It took my mother nine years to finally be curious enough to ask questions. I shared small details here and there, but my mom never asked any follow-up questions.

Finally, they met on neutral ground. My mom and birth mother talked for two hours. Her husband and my dad talked for two hours. I was in the building but had other responsibilities and was not privy to their conversations. After the event, later that night, my mom said, “They are such nice people.” I wanted to yell, “I know!” But my mom had to do it in her own time. God was working on her heart just like He was working in all of our hearts as well.

This is long, and I could write so much more. Actually, I have written and published my story, called Adoption Reimagined: Building Relationships in the Adoption Arena and What to Do When It Doesn’t Work. I am also a life coach, and I weave in the nine Fruit of the Spirit and strategies to help adoptees, adoptive moms, and birth mothers navigate difficult situations and the trauma that adoption can create.

I will end with this: patience is the key. My daughter got married in August, and my birth mother sat next to my mom, who sat next to me on the front row. When I asked my mother if she could sit on the front row, my mother said, “Of course! Where else would she sit?” I am so glad I made the call.

If you need help navigating the adoption arena, want my book or book a call, visit my website.
Blog post.

<align-justify>As 2026 quickly approaches, I contemplated a New Year’s resolution and then thought, “Why bother.” I have seldom made a resolution, let alone keep one. It isn’t that I don’t like change, which I openly admit that change is difficult for me, I just don’t see the need for a resolution that I won’t keep. Why should I put pressure upon myself to keep a resolution, which I may break by January 2nd?</align-justify>
One year I tried the “One Word” concept. Where you pick a word which helps you focus on making a change. You post it around your house, office, car, etc., to remind you of the big change your “One Word” represents. By mid-February I probably couldn’t even tell you my “Word.”
<align-justify>In 2026 the only “Word” that is important to me is Jesus, The Word, himself. If we focus more on our Savior, and less on our resolutions, the changes we desire will come automatically. Why? Because the closer we walk with Jesus, the more we become like Him, creating a light within us that begins to shine.</align-justify><align-center>In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God.
God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
John 1:1-5</align-center>
The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. I love that verse. No matter how gloomy this world is, or how dark our days are, Jesus’ light will shine through the darkness. When Jesus is part of our lives, we cannot extinguish the flame of hope.

Jesus lights our path, so we no longer walk blindly through this sinful world. As our Savior, He removes the darkness of sin from our lives, helping us to change our lives for the better.

So if you are making a New Year’s resolution, I recommend one which focuses The Word, Jesus Christ. He will automatically bring about changes in your life that are for the better, without the pressure of keeping a New Year’s resolution.

Happy New Year and let your light shine in a lost world!

Don’t let dysfunctional relationships be the obstacle between you and your purpose. Reimagine a different path and make choices that get you where you want to go. One thing is for sure, if you keep walking down the same path of hurt, pain and despair, you will not be able to experience thriving family relationships. Adoption Reimagined will help you push through the agony adoption can create and overcome physical, emotional, mental, relational and Spiritual obstacles. It is a guide to help you build relationships in the adoption arena and what to do when it doesn't work. Don’t deprive yourself of your purpose. My experience with adoption can help you reimagine how your mind, body and soul can function differently and thrive in adoption relationships or how to be content with no relationship at all.

Adoption Reimagined is for those who have experienced loss in the adoption arena, those who are lost in the adoption arena and those who love us and want to understand the struggles of adoptees, adoptive moms and birth mothers.

Blog post.

There were many events which had to line up for me to bring a man to tears yesterday. First of all, years ago I had been to Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan and snapped some pictures of this unique waterfall. Sometime after that visit, I created several pictures with quotes and Bible verses on them to sell at craft shows. A picture of the waterfall was among them.

Second, I have adopted a new plan to clean the basement. If something goes down stairs, something must come back upstairs and be evaluated. A couple of weeks ago I did just that and found the basket full of those photos which I had matted. I looked through them and rather than pitching them I packed them for the next craft show. If nothing else, maybe I could give them away.

We decided to go to Florida for about a month, so I signed up for a small craft show at the American Legion just down the road from us. I packed all of my books and crafts in the truck in hopes of finding more than one event this winter.

When I arrived at the American Legion there was a little confusion about tables. The lady in charge of the event was very accommodating, and gave me two tables under the porch near the bar entrance. Unfortunately, it was also the smoking corner but I survived and it was all worthwhile because God had a plan.

While setting up, I took a few moments to go through the pictures and select ones that were appealing hoping to attract attention. If I had not done that, I would not have remembered I had a picture of the falls with me. Just another step in God's plan.

It was late morning when I struck up a conversation with two gentlemen having breakfast at the picnic table next to me. One conversation lead to another until we were talking about Niagara Falls. Then one of the gentleman asked if I had ever seen Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan.

“Yes, it looks like root beer,” I replied.

“That’s the one. That’s the one. It is so beautiful. I grew up in Michigan and love that waterfall. I haven’t seen it in years.”

God reminded me that I had a picture of the falls with me. I went to the stack of photos and it was right there on top. I handed him an 8x10 picture of Tahquamenon Falls which said “The Lord will reign forever.” Psalm 146:10

“You can have this,” I said

“You are giving me this? You are bringing tears to my eyes. Are you really giving me this?”

I felt so blessed that I was able to touch this man’s heart so deeply and said, “Yep, it’s all yours.”

As the conversation continued I found out that not only did the picture of the falls touch his heart, but also the scripture, as he was a Christian. Later in the day, he returned to play pool. He came outside to tell me that he had placed the picture right inside his door where he would see it as he came and went. He had a friend that was going to make a picture frame for him.

God truly reigns forever and is also in control of the events in our lives. What a blessing for both me and the gentleman I met yesterday!

Blog post.

Change doesn’t always come easy for me. Maybe that is why I worked for the same company for over twenty years. There were good and bad times at that company, but in the end I was always glad that I persevered. Making it through difficult times gave me a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

At this point and time in my life, change comes a little easier. Is it easier because of my age, or is it my faith that every change in life works out for the greater good? I am a strong believer that if you pray and ask God for direction, He will lead you through changes.

My most recent changes include: Posting on my blog more, and working on a book less. Helping other authors self-publish. A new look for my website. Helping less on the farm, as the next generation takes over.

It is like God has laid a path out in front of me that I didn’t know existed. A path that I am struggling to understand, but I continue to follow God’s lead. All of the changes are different, yet somehow interconnected. For example, helping less on the farm has allowed me to spend time on website changes and help other authors publish their books. I have always known that God blessed me with the gift of helps, so I have enjoyed working with these ladies.

My new website focuses more on my books and my blog, and less on speaking. I am good with that because writing is my first love. Every step of the way, I see God before me and I continue to follow.

I wonder if I had to get older to find my purpose in life, but I am reminded that I have always had a purpose. God has called me to be His hands and feet by sharing my crazy life experiences and stories with others relating them to the scriptures.

As I prepare for a big announcement that my website has a new look, I realize it isn’t about the website itself. It is about my new outlook on life, and using my gifts in a more focused and purposeful way. So, don’t ever feel you are too old to make a change, or be afraid of a new direction in life. Be bold in your faith and remember that when change comes about through prayer, God’s purpose will prevail.

Take a look at the story of Job as an example. God thrust him into some drastic changes in life! When Job’s friends accused him of great sins, he boldly rebuked them, expressing that his faith and hope were in God. No matter the mental, physical, and emotional troubles Job faced, he remained faithful to God and followed the path before him.

So, follow Job’s example and stay close to the Lord allowing Him to set a path before you whether through adversity or just difficult changes in life. He will direct your steps, and may you always remember that God’s Change Is Good.

<align-center>But he knows where I am going.
And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold.
For I have stayed on God’s paths;
I have followed his ways and not turned aside.
(Job 23:10-11)</align-center>

Blog post.

Recently I assisted three new authors with the publishing process. From start to finish: formatting, uploading files, book covers, tips of the trade, and being published as an Indie author. They now have digital and paperback books available for purchase. It isn’t that I have great knowledge, or know all the tricks of the trades, but after publishing ten books myself I am able to assist.

I didn’t help them because I wanted accolades or payment, but because I wanted to help them each obtain their goals of getting their books in front of others. They all have wonderful devotional books, but their writing styles are different than mine, which is great. It takes different styles of authors to impact different people.

Ironically, three of us have one thing in common. Our first name is Mary. I have sent group emails with information to the Marys, because it pertains to them specifically and their goals. When I do this, I call it a 3-way Mary email. Just like a 3-way bulb, different authors bring a unique brightness to this world.

As Psalm 139:14 says, “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.” The 3-way Mary is wonderfully complex as in Susan, which means each of us has a unique personality, writing ability, and writing style as an author. We also all display different God given characteristics that make us unique in this world. We are an example of God’s wonderful workmanship, in a unique and marvelous way.

This world would be a boring place and books would be mundane, if we were all created the same, with the same styles, and the same likes and dislikes in life. Variety is what makes learning from one another exciting. I encourage you to read a variety of authors and devotionals that are easily available in today’s world. Each book is unique and wonderfully written, just like the authors are unique in God’s eyes. But, if you are looking for suggestions, I recommend three new authors on the 3-way bulb that brightens your pathway to Jesus.

God’s Magnificent Creatures by Mary Rogers, Faith and Goats by Susan Criswell, and Sloppy Christianity by Mary O. Miller!

Enjoy the devotional books and study materials God puts before you as you grow closer to Christ. And, remember to pray and thank God for making everyone in this world unique and wonderfully complex...including yourself!

Blog post.

There are blood relatives which make up your family, and church families. Close friends are often considered family, and as a nation, we are a family. Families can be full of belly laughs, good times, smiles, and unforgettable memories. There is survival mode through tragedies, and celebrations of great accomplishments. But families also come with a blend of personalities, so there is frustration, the occasional harsh word, and arguments which get out of hand. The key to a close family is always remembering what is important. Unconditional love and forgiveness.

When difficulties arise, we need to step back, pray, and consider what Jesus would do. He would always forgive. Grace was the key element to His ministry, and forgiveness should always be a part of our Christian walk, no matter the circumstances.

In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, his wife, Erika, publicly announced that she forgave the assassin. I’m sure those words were difficult to utter as she mourned the loss of her husband, but she forgave because that is what Jesus called her to do.

The words in the Lord’s prayer, “And forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.” (Matthew 6:12) are powerful words. They are a command from God. When we forgive others, God is forgiving us and setting us free. Forgiveness is powerful, while unforgiveness will eat at your soul.

When the person that hurts you is someone you are close to, like a family member, it seems more difficult to forgive. The pain cuts to the heart, causing your emotions to rage. The loss Erika feels from a complete stranger is deep pain, yet she forgives. The Kirk family suffered a great loss, as did this nation, but from that loss will come great triumph through her words of forgiveness, and the power of Christ.

We all need to take a moment, look into our own lives and reflect on forgiveness. Who do you need to reach out to today? With the grace of Jesus say, “I forgive you,” to someone you love. It will cleanse your soul, and mend your relationship.

As Paul urged the people of Corinth to forgive the sinner, we also need to spread a little love and forgive others. And as forgiveness echoes throughout families, it will be the stepping stone for healing this nation as well.

Now, regarding the one who started all this—the person in question who caused all this pain—I want you to know that I am not the one injured in this as much as, with a few exceptions, all of you. So I don’t want to come down too hard. What the majority of you agreed to as punishment is punishment enough. Now is the time to forgive this man and help him back on his feet. If all you do is pour on the guilt, you could very well drown him in it. My counsel now is to pour on the love. (2 Corinthians 2:5-8 MSG)

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

How do you actually increase your knowledge of God, and build the wonderful qualities mentioned in the Fruits of the Spirit? Many people say, “Don’t ever pray for patience, because God will test you!” True, but if you ask God for patience, He is going to give you the ability to grow patience. He doesn’t just give you the Fruits of the Spirit, you have to practice them, by seizing opportunities.

Grace is free and God freely gives to His children, but once you have received His wonderful grace, you want more love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. He doesn’t just hand these qualities over to you, you have to put in a little elbow grease and do the necessary work, by watching for opportunities to embellish these gifts.

You may ask God to show you how to love more deeply and to be more gentle with others. Other times, God simply puts the opportunity for growth in front of you, as you face an unexpected situation in life.

My friend has been thrust into this situation head on. Her granddaughter continues to choose a life on the streets, rather than working a job and doing what is best for her and her son. My friend continually asks God to give her loving words and a gentle approach. She is preparing for the opportunity to speak with her granddaughter. Opportunity being the key word in this situation. She has to be prepared to show love, kindness, gentleness and self-control when her granddaughter calls once again, because if she doesn’t, she may push her further into a life on the streets.

You may be called to be faithful to your spouse, your loved ones, or your Lord. It doesn’t just happen...it is a result of an opportunity. When tempted, do you fall into temptation, or do you remain faithful? God gives you the opportunity to choose, and you need to be prepared and make your decisions based on godly wisdom.

Life flies by each of us with great speed. Rather than stressing during trials, you need to pray for wisdom in all situations. Psalms 90:12 says, “Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.”

The difference between stressful situations and spiritual growth is your perspective. Rather than seeing life as one trial after another, see your circumstances as an opportunity from God to further your spiritual growth and enhance the Fruits of the Spirit. So, “let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. (Colossians 2:7).

Checkout this wonderful devotional book, Faith and Goats.

I have no regrets on this purchase… I was unable to put it down after reading the first few stories. I had a smile on my face throughout and yes there were a few tears. I felt I was there on many of the adventures. The words definitely came from her heart and the scripture references had to be prompted from above. Highly recommend for a uplifting easy reading experience. ~ Ragmop, Amazon Customer

Purchase your copy of Faith and Goats on my store.

I had the privilege of helping Mary Rogers publish her first devotional book this year. It was a blessing to work together and her book is wonderful.

This book was a gift and so enjoyable to read! The author uses her own everyday life stories to illustrate life's up and downs and how God's creatures often play a role in those. She tells the tales (or tails) often with humor as well as sadness and relates them to those struggles and triumphs that we all encounter. The summaries at the end of each story are very heart-felt and I could usually see myself in the observations. Applicable biblical scripture also followed which reinforced the thoughts from each story. Heartily recommend this book to all! ~ William, Amazon Customer

Purchase Mary Rogers' book God's Magnificent Creatures from my store.

Barnes and Noble Soho Everand Fable Palace Marketplace Smashwords
